Weight loss is often one of the recommendations to reduce snoring. But does it really help? Let’s look at why extra weight can contribute to snoring and why losing weight might help.
Snoring occurs when air moves through relaxed tissues in the throat and makes them vibrate during sleep. Snoring can be occasional for some people and an ongoing issue for others. It can also sometimes point to another health condition.
Extra body weight may contribute to snoring when fat deposits collect around the upper airway, neck, and tongue. These deposits can narrow the airway, which means air has less room to move. A more narrow airway can increase vibration and make snoring more likely.
Extra tissue around the airway may also make the airway more collapsible during sleep. That means the airway is more likely to partly close as the throat muscles relax. This can lead to louder snoring and, in some people, breathing interruptions.
Snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) often occur together because they can have the same root problem — a narrowed or collapsible upper airway.
