7 Supplements for Sleep Apnea — and What the Research Actually Shows

If you have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), you’ve probably come across claims that supplements can improve breathing during sleep. Some of these nutrients have been studied — but none have been shown to treat sleep apnea or replace proven treatments like continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy.

Scientists have focused on three main groups of supplements:

Nutrients Linked to Sleep and Airway Function

Some nutrients play a direct role in muscle function and sleep quality — two areas that matter for people with sleep apnea. Researchers have looked closely at vitamin D and magnesium because deficiencies in both are common in people with OSA and may affect how well the body regulates sleep and keeps the airway open.

1. Vitamin D

Vitamin D deficiency appears to be especially common in people with obstructive sleep apnea. Several studies, including a 2024 systematic review, have found that lower vitamin D levels are associated with more severe OSA. But researchers still debate whether deficiency contributes to the condition or simply occurs alongside it.

Scientists are interested in vitamin D because it supports immune health and muscle function, including the muscles that help keep the upper airway open during sleep.

Even so, most of the evidence comes from observational studies. Clinical trials haven’t shown that taking vitamin D reduces the number of breathing interruptions during sleep or reverses sleep apnea.

For people who are deficient, correcting low vitamin D levels is important for overall health, but it shouldn’t be viewed as a stand-alone treatment for sleep apnea.

2. Magnesium

Magnesium plays a role in muscle movement, nerve function, and hundreds of chemical reactions throughout the body. Because the muscles around the throat help keep the airway open during sleep, some researchers have wondered whether magnesium levels might affect sleep apnea symptoms.

Low magnesium levels have been linked to poor sleep quality and may contribute to inflammation. Some studies suggest magnesium supplements can improve sleep in certain people, particularly those who don’t get enough magnesium through food.

Still, research specifically looking at magnesium and obstructive sleep apnea is limited. There’s no strong evidence that magnesium supplements can prevent the throat from becoming blocked during sleep or reduce the severity of OSA.

Antioxidant Supplements

Sleep apnea causes oxygen levels to repeatedly drop and rise throughout the night. Over time, those fluctuations place oxidative stress on cells and may contribute to inflammation and cardiovascular problems.

Researchers have studied several antioxidant supplements — vitamin C, vitamin E, and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) — to see whether they might help protect the body from some of that damage.

3. Vitamin C

A few small studies suggest vitamin C may help support blood vessel health in people with sleep apnea — a notable finding given that untreated OSA is linked to a higher risk of heart disease and stroke.

However, there’s little evidence that vitamin C improves sleep apnea itself. Studies haven’t found that it reduces breathing interruptions during sleep, and most have been too small to draw firm conclusions.

4. Vitamin E

Like vitamin C, vitamin E has been studied because of its ability to help protect cells from oxidative damage. Some studies suggest antioxidant nutrients may help reduce harmful effects of repeated oxygen fluctuations.

However, research specifically involving vitamin E and sleep apnea remains limited. Studies haven’t shown that it improves breathing during sleep or reduces the severity of OSA.

5. N-Acetylcysteine

N-acetylcysteine is an antioxidant supplement that helps the body make glutathione, a substance that protects cells from damage. So far, studies involving NAC and sleep apnea have been limited, and researchers haven’t found evidence that it reduces breathing interruptions during sleep or improves OSA symptoms.

Cardiovascular Support Supplements

Untreated sleep apnea raises the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. Researchers have studied omega-3 fatty acids and B vitamins in people with OSA partly because both nutrients are known to support cardiovascular health — and because people with sleep apnea may be more likely to be deficient in them.

6. Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids, commonly found in fish oil supplements, have attracted research interest partly because some studies have found that lower levels are associated with more severe sleep apnea.

Omega-3s may help lower inflammation and support healthy blood vessels — but that doesn’t mean taking fish oil will improve breathing at night. Current evidence suggests omega-3 supplements may support heart health in people with OSA, but researchers haven’t shown that they treat sleep apnea itself.

7. B Vitamins

B vitamins, including vitamin B12 and folate, are essential for energy production, nerve health, and the formation of red blood cells. Researchers have explored whether deficiencies in these nutrients might contribute to fatigue and some of the health problems often seen in people with sleep apnea.

Studies haven’t shown that B vitamin supplements improve sleep apnea itself. Like vitamin D and magnesium, they’re most useful for people who have a documented deficiency.

Can Supplements Replace CPAP Therapy?

For many people, the appeal of sleep apnea supplements is the hope that they might provide a simpler alternative to a CPAP machine. Unfortunately, current research doesn’t support that idea.

CPAP therapy remains the most effective treatment for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea. Oral appliances, weight loss, and surgery may also play a role depending on the cause and severity of the condition.

Before You Try Supplements

If you’re considering supplements alongside your treatment plan, a few facts are worth knowing:

  • Quality varies widely — Because the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t regulate supplements as strictly as medications, the ingredients inside the bottle may not always match what’s listed on the label.
  • Deficiency matters — If your doctor identifies a specific nutrient deficiency, correcting it may support your overall health, but it won’t treat sleep apnea on its own.

Always talk with your doctor before starting any supplement. Supplements can interact with medications and worsen certain medical conditions.

Supplements may have a supporting role for some people — but proven treatments still do the heavy lifting.
